Local Authority Sites - the PlanWeb Pick of the Net

In this section we start by listing the best directories and comprehensive sources of information relating to the Internet activities of local government. A full list of local authorities sites is contained at the end of this section. Our pick of the Net is set out below.

UK Local Government Online (from Cityscape)

A great site which allows you to identify local authority sites by picking from UK maps or from lists. Gives a very good view-at-a glance of the geographical distribution of sites and the take-up by different types of local authority.

Logic's Local Government Directory and Tagish's Local Government Online

Two very comprehensive directories of local authority sites, providing further supporting information.

CCTA - The Government Centre for Information Systems

The Government site which includes a very good directory of local authority sites, together with links to other public sector agencies and information about the work of the CCTA.

From the publishers we have Local Government Chronicle's LGCNet which provides not just references to other sites, but a wealth of information, briefings, features and articles about any local government of topical interest that you care to name. The site is likely to start restricting access to much of the information to subscription payers in the near future. As an alternative, you may like to look at the Hemming's Group's Local Government On-line (LogOn) site (which publishes the Municipal Journal and a number of other professional publications).

For the researchers, and information, IT and management specialists you should look closely at the sites of the London Research Centre (formerly at the GLC, and holding a lot of general, and London specific information), the Local Government Management Board (LGMB) and the Local Authorities Intelligence Association (LARIA).

There are a number of other very interesting sites which you should keep your eye on as they develop. These include London Borough of Brent which is the first local authority using the Intenet for on-line consultation on next year's budget figures and priorities. The Brent site also includes Hot-Links to other local government sites in the UK. Another site to watch is the UK Citizens Online Democracy which is a discussion forum for anyone interested in using the Internet to participate in the political process.
