Environmental Sites - the PlanWeb Pick of the Net

Within the environmental field, there is so much to cover and many great sites the world over. We do not aim to cover everything but to highlight the major directories, key organisations and one or two of the best examples of individual sites. Our pick of the Net is given below.

If you are looking for a specific site, or researching a particular topic some very useful directories are:

• Environmental Organization WebDirectory
  which claims to be the earth's biggest environmental search engine.
• EnviroLink
  which including an EnviroWeb library of organisations and resources world-wide.
• EcoNet
  covering many ecosites, acid rain, biodiversity and sustainable development (in A-Z format).
• Yahoo's Environment Section
  the grass roots search engine's directory of environmental sites.
• British Trees
  list of related organisations, publications, and links in the UK and abroad.
• CityScape's 'Environment Digest'
  also providing a good introduction to environmental issues and links to sites.

Of the official organisations, all the following sites provide a wide range of information for the area of responsibility within their remit, including links to other sites:

• Royal Commission on Historical Monuments in England (RCHME)
• Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland
• Ancient Monuments Laboratory
• The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts
• Council for British Archaeology
• The Countryside Commission (which includes information on each National Park)
• Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution (including the Public Register Systems and contacts)
• National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) (covering crop varieties and strains)
• National Rivers Authority (not yet complete)
• Natural Environment Research Council
• Pesticides Safety Directorate
• The Met.Office Home Page

Pressure groups and environmental networks include the following topical sites:

• Rainforest Action Network
• Global Recycling Network
• GreenNet (another global network)
• Friends of the Earth
• Greenpeace
• Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) including some interesting maps and photographs (How's Your Beach?)
• UK 2000 Scotland (an initiative bringing together local authorities, organisations and the business community in Scotland)

Cheshire Environment and Planning
One of the best examples of what the local authorities are doing, which includes Agenda 21, Structure Plan, sustainable transport and related information.
